Fancy Schmancy Whiteboard

Here's another non-card project :)

I got the idea for this on Pinterest, where I saw a frame that someone had put a piece of lined paper inside and written on as a msg board. Of course, lined paper was just not fun enough for me so I went to town! I've had this Beaut Chateau DSP sitting around forever and with the help of an IKEA picture frame, decided to make something happen:

Despite the fact that my job requires me to write on a whiteboard multiple times a day, I am a complete failure at it, the kids make fun of me every day, so I apologize for the messy msg I have written, but the sentiment is there lol. I think this will be a cute way that Brian and I can leave each other little messages every day, no grocery lists, missed calls or reminders, just personal little messages to brighten each others' days :)

Here are some closeups of some more details:

I'm not sure if anyone out there has made the same flowers before although I'm sure they have, I was just playing around this afternoon when I made these, happy accident!

I started with 8 punched scallop circles. I used my 1 3/4" Scallop Circle Punch. The flower really only needs 7 but I mess up a lot so I punch an extra just in case. If you want to do a small flower like the blue one on the whiteboard you only need 4, or do a larger one like the pink one you will need at least 12.

Fold 3 of the scallops in half...

then crumple them all up as much as you can, uncrumple them and crumple them one more time to break down the fibers and make them both pliable and textured...

... for the next few steps you will be working with the 3 that were folded in half at the start... fold them back in half...

... and then fold them in half one more time...

... add little bits of Sticky Strip to both sides of the bottom of each folded scallop...

... stick two of the three scallops together with their folds facing in opposite directions...

...add the third in between the two...

...now you need one of the other scallops and add a tiny square of Sticky Strip in the middle...

...and stick the three folded pieces right onto the center...

...scrunch and crumple it all up...

...and then let it open...

...for the next layer you need to layer the remaining three scallops on top of each other in a somewhat circular layout. They need to be adhered together with Sticky Strip and make sure to add a tiny square of it into the center as on the last layer...

...stick the finished portion of the flower onto the center...

...crumple and let open  as you did on the last layer. Over time the flower will open up a bit more, but don't be afraid to fluff it and manipulate it into the shape you want. To make a larger flower add another layer of 5 scallop circles (like the largest flower on the whiteboard).

I hope this makes sense to follow :)

Let me know what you think, and maybe you have a use for something similar to share?

Cheers!

  1. Beautiful! Can't wait to see the tutorial for the flowers. Also, the DSP you used - is it lined, or did you take lined paper and add the DSP overtop?

    Great job!

  2. Thanks Alanna! The paper inside the frame is from the Beau Chateau DSP set and 2 of the designs come with lines on them already :)
